The human migration story has never experienced this form of disruption. Migrants, immigrants and refugees are no longer making blind journeys across borders. The New York Times recently published an article naming the 21st-Century Migrant’s Essentials: Food, Shelter, Smartphone. New and disruptive digital tools are changing the landscape of migration.
We’re documenting how migrants, immigrants, refugees and organizations are using technology and digital media in order to inspire international action to solve migration challenges worldwide.
We’re undertaking this project because sharing digital stories sparks and strengthens relationships. It fosters understanding and inspiration among people. Online platforms have become the most revolutionary channel of communication for communities to share resources, up-to-date information, and new findings with each other since radio and television. However, radio and tv are still primarily a one-to-many channel. The internet is a many-to-many channel. Very many.
Sharing stories through blog posts, videos and social media allows us to inform online communities about the realities of social issues like migration and creates a better understanding between cultures. Photos, videos, and research shared through documentaries and social media gave us a deeper understanding of the complexities of migration. From geographical locations to droughts, climate change, to civil unrest, everything is tied to the reasons why people are migrating around the world.
Our passions are rooted in our family’s own migrations to the U.S. from Colombia in the 70s and from El Salvador during the civil war in the 80s. The knowledge we’ve accessed, the connections we’ve made and the relationships we’ve maintained through online media and social platforms are the reasons we’re so dedicated to the power of digital media and digital storytelling.
This project marks the beginning of an immersive digital migrant experience, vested in social impact and shared through digital storytelling.
We look forward to learning and collaborating with the many people who have helped us get here and who have helped inspire this project. We also look forward to finding the right partners and sponsors for this digital storytelling project and sharing information and resources with you throughout this experience. This project will allow us to explore our professional talents with the most creative freedom we’ve ever had. We look forward to this project with you.
